The European Car Market Fell 20.3 Percent In February As The Blockade Continued

Apr 26, 2021

With much of the region still in lockdown, car sales in Europe continued to plunge 20.3 percent in February.

According to data released recently by the European automobile manufacturers' association ACEA, passenger car sales in 30 countries, including the EU, EFTA and the UK, totaled 850,170 units in February, which is the worst performance for the same period since 2013. Still, that was slightly better than January's 843, 000 sales, and the decline was narrower.

However, two straight months of steep declines left sales in those countries at 1,693,059 vehicles in the first two months of the year, down 23.1% from a year earlier.

This means that 508,000 vehicles have been lost in the first two months of this year compared with the same period in 2020. While the next three months of March and May could see an increase from a 30-year low, there is no doubt that it was a difficult quarter for the European auto industry as the lockdown continued in some countries throughout March.
