Japan Unveiled Green Growth Strategy To Ban Petrol Cars By 2035

Dec 29, 2020

According to foreign media , on December 25, the Japanese government announced its "Green Growth Strategy", which aims to eliminate gasoline vehicles within the next 15 years, achieve net zero carbon emissions, and create nearly $2 trillion of green growth every year by 2050.

The "Green Growth Strategy" is an action plan for hydrogen energy and the auto industry that aims to meet Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's pledge in October to reduce net carbon emissions by the middle of the century. Japan is one of the world's largest economies and an important manufacturer of light vehicles for domestic consumption and export.

According to the strategy, electric vehicles (including hybrids and fuel cell vehicles) will replace gasoline cars by 2035. To accelerate the spread of electric cars, the government plans to halve the cost of car batteries to Y10,000 or less per kilowatt-hour by 2030.

The Green Growth Strategy expects hydrogen consumption to rise from 200 tons in 2017 to 3 million tons in 2030 and to about 20 million tons by 2050 in areas such as power generation and transportation.

The strategy also involves 14 industries, including offshore wind power and fuel ammonia, such as installing offshore wind power plant of 45 gigawatt by 2040. Japan plans to use renewable energy "as much as possible" by 2050, mainly through wind power plant. It hopes to increase renewable energy's share of all energy from less than 20 percent now to about 50-60 percent, while reducing its reliance on nuclear energy.
