Europe Is The Biggest Market For Electric Cars

Mar 02, 2021

In 2020, boosted by heavy government subsidies and the emergence of dozens of new all-electric and hybrid cars on the market, Europeans are flocking to electric cars. For the first time since 2015, Europe has overtaken China as the world's largest market for electric vehicles.

Global sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids were 3.2 million in 2020, including 1.395 million in Europe, and their share of global new electric vehicle sales nearly doubled to 43 percent, compared with 26 percent in 2019.

In most markets, pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are more resistant to epidemic than gasoline-powered vehicles. The European car market saw sales drop by as much as 80 percent in the second quarter of 2020 due to the epidemic. In addition, the sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in 2020 will up to 1.337 million . Average sales between July and December were up 80 percent year on year.

The sales of electric vehicles (pure electric and plug-in hybrid) in US were up only 4 percent, while the market for petrol-powered vehicles was down 15 percent year on year, and much of the improvement is due to the launch of the Model Y. Tesla continues to dominate the industry, accounting for 62% of plug-in sales and 79% of all-electric sales in the United States.

Germany is the second largest single market for electric vehicles after China. Sales of new energy vehicles in Germany increased by 254% over 2019, pure electric vehicles by 191%, and plug-in hybrid cars by 351%, which is enough to show that plug-in hybrid cars dominate the German new energy vehicle market. The global average for 2020 is 31% for plug-in hybrids and 69% for pure electric vehicles.
